Building a Follow-Up System That Actually Works

Silence is Not Rejection

Many applications go unanswered not because you're unqualified, but because hiring managers are busy and inboxes are overwhelming. A well-timed, concise follow-up email can bring you back to the top of the pile and demonstrate exactly the kind of initiative employers want.

The Follow-Up Timeline

  • Day 7, send a short follow-up if you haven't heard back after applying
  • Day 14, a second nudge, referencing any relevant updates to your application
  • Day 21+, move on, persistence is good, but let the role go if there's no signal

What to Write

Keep follow-ups short: three sentences maximum. Reference the role you applied for, express continued interest, and ask if there's any additional information you can provide. Do not apologize for following up. Confidence in follow-ups signals confidence in interviews.
